Overview
The burner mounting plate is a heavy, flat steel plate bolted to the drum's inlet-end hood structure. It provides the rigid, accurately dimensioned datum surface against which the burner gun, combustion-air fan flange, and flame-stabiliser cone are aligned and secured. Correct positional alignment of the burner relative to the drum centreline is critical for flame shape, combustion completeness, and avoidance of flame impingement on the drum shell or flights near the burner end.
The plate operates at the highest ambient temperature in the plant exterior — facing radiant heat from the flame and conductive heat from the burner body — and must remain flat and undistorted through repeated thermal cycles over the plant's operational life. It also provides slotted adjustment features used during initial commissioning to fine-tune the burner position in both horizontal and vertical planes.
Function
Misalignment of the burner — even a few millimetres of angular offset from the drum centreline — deflects the flame toward the shell wall, causing localised hot spots that distort the shell, degrade the internal refractory lining, and damage the dryer flights nearest the burner. The mounting plate provides the reference plane for all burner-to-drum alignment adjustments, with slotted bolt patterns allowing horizontal and vertical vernier adjustment at commissioning. Its structural rigidity prevents combustion-air fan vibration from transmitting into the drum seal, which would accelerate seal wear. The plate's thermal mass also acts as a break, dissipating heat before it can conduct into the structural frame.
Construction & quality
Fabricated from 20–40 mm thick structural steel plate (IS 2062 Gr B / ASTM A36), thermally stress-relieved after flame-cutting. The bolt-circle and centreline bore are machined on a CNC boring and milling centre to a positional tolerance of ±0.5 mm, maintaining concentric burner alignment. Adjustment slots allow ±25 mm of XY offset and ±1° of angular trim. The central aperture (150–350 mm diameter, matched to burner size) is bored to a smooth chamfered edge to prevent turbulent airflow disruption. The burner-facing surface receives a ceramic-loaded high-temperature coating rated to 600 °C continuous. All mounting hardware — including heat-resistant threaded inserts — is rated to 400 °C.
When to replace
- Warping or bowing of the plate exceeding 2 mm flatness deviation, causing progressive burner misalignment
- Cracking around the central bore from repeated thermal fatigue cycling during plant starts and stops
- Elongation or ovalling of adjustment slots reducing clamping force and allowing burner drift
- Surface scaling or paint blistering indicating coating failure and approaching base-metal oxidation
- Abnormal flame deflection observed through the drum inspection port — a primary symptom of plate distortion
Compatibility & fitment
Mounting plates are machined to the specific burner flange pattern, drum inlet-end geometry, and bolt-hole layout for all AVL-DMP models; Avelta can also supply retrofit plates to adapt alternative-make burners to Avelta drum assemblies.
Why buy from Avelta
Avelta burner mounting plates are machined on CNC centres after stress-relief to maintain bore alignment to ±0.5 mm, ensuring correct flame centreline geometry is preserved through repeated seasonal shutdown and restart thermal cycles.
