The unit is the essential tool for prime coat, tack coat, fog seal, surface dressing, and chip seal operations, where a consistent, metered film of binder is the structural foundation of every pavement layer above it. At its core, the distributor draws heated bitumen from a heavily insulated mild-steel tank, circulates it continuously through a full-circulation ring main to prevent viscosity loss from cold spots, and delivers it under controlled pump pressure through a multi-section, hydraulically adjustable spray bar fitted with flat-fan nozzles at uniform 25 mm spacing. Application rate — expressed in litres per square metre — is maintained automatically by cross-referencing vehicle ground speed, via a GPS or wheel-pulse sensor, against pump output.   1. 01

    Loading and Filling

    Bitumen is transferred from a road tanker or storage tank into the AVL-BPD vessel through the rear-mounted fill coupling using the on-board centrifugal transfer pump, rated at 400 l/min. A sight glass and tank-level gauge confirm fill volume before the loading valve is closed and the coupling capped.

  2. 02

    Heating to Operating Temperature

    The direct-fire diesel burner ignites automatically under digital thermostat control and heats the binder through immersed heating coils until the set operating temperature — typically 150–180 °C for penetration-grade bitumen — is reached and stabilised to within ±2 °C. A high-temperature safety cutout prevents overheating.

  3. 03

    Full-Circulation Priming

    Before spraying begins, the gear pump circulates heated bitumen through the entire ring main — including the spray bar body — and back to the tank, ensuring the bar reaches operating temperature and purging any residual cold material. This step eliminates the nozzle-blocking delays common in partial-circulation systems.

    Rate Setting and Pre-Spray Checks

    The operator enters the target application rate (l/m²) and working spray-bar width into the rate controller console at the rear of the machine. Nozzle angle is verified for the binder type in use, section valves are set to the required working width, and the vehicle is driven to the start line at the prescribed speed.

    Application Pass

    As the vehicle advances at a steady speed between 3 and 20 km/h, the rate controller reads ground speed from the GPS or wheel-pulse sensor and modulates pump output in real time to maintain the target l/m². Bitumen exits through the flat-fan nozzles in overlapping fans that produce a uniform, continuous film across the full working width.

    Section Valve and Edge Control

    Individual spray-bar section valves are opened or closed from the rear console to match lane boundaries, crossfall transitions, or irregular geometry. The hydraulic fold mechanism retracts outer bar sections for narrow passes or for road transit without interrupting the circulation loop.

    Flushing and Shutdown

    At the end of the working shift or before a change of binder grade, diesel solvent is circulated through the pump, ring main, and spray bar to displace residual bitumen, preventing curing and blockage. The bar is retracted, end caps are fitted, and the digital controller stores cumulative area and volume logs for the day's work.
