Overview

The burner atomising nozzle is the combustion component that converts pressurised fuel oil — diesel or light fuel oil — into a fine hollow-cone or solid-cone spray for ignition in the AVL-BPD burner chamber. It is a replaceable nozzle screwed into the burner gun head using a standard 3/8"-24 UNF or M12 thread. The nozzle controls three parameters simultaneously: fuel flow rate in US gallons per hour (USGPH) or litres per hour, spray angle, and spray pattern — the three variables that together determine burner combustion efficiency and heat output.

Burner nozzle replacement is a planned maintenance item, typically scheduled at 500–800 operating hours or at the first sign of combustion degradation, not when complete failure occurs. Proactive replacement prevents the cumulative efficiency losses and coil sooting that arise from operating a worn nozzle.

Function

A worn or partially blocked burner nozzle causes incomplete atomisation, producing large-droplet combustion with visible smoke, carbon deposition on the heating coil and flue surfaces, and rising fuel consumption per degree of heat delivered. In severe cases, an over-fuelling condition from a distorted orifice can produce fuel flooding of the combustion chamber or burner safety lockout from excess temperature. Replacing the nozzle on schedule maintains maximum thermal efficiency and protects the heating coil surface from soot fouling, which significantly reduces heat-transfer performance over time.

Construction & quality

Body: precision-machined brass hexagon for wrench engagement without distortion. Orifice: sintered stainless steel insert or ruby stone, drilled to ±0.02 mm for consistent flow rate. Distributor swirl insert: stainless steel with machined slot geometry for the specified spray pattern — Solid (S), Semi-solid (SS) or Hollow (H) — to ASTM or Danfoss classification. Integral stainless steel mesh filter in the body inlet. Flow rates available from 0.40 USGPH (1.5 L/h) to 4.00 USGPH (15 L/h) in industry-standard increments.
