Overview
The fill and discharge hose assembly connects the AVL-BPD tank inlet or outlet to bitumen tanker trucks, roadside storage tanks or prime coat distribution points. It must handle hot bitumen at up to 200 °C (392 °F) and pressures up to 6 bar (87 psi) during pump-assisted discharge, while remaining flexible enough for daily coupling and uncoupling on dusty, uneven construction sites. Camlock (cam-and-groove) couplings allow a secure, leak-free connection in under 5 seconds without tools.
The hose assembly is a safety-critical item because a failure during hot bitumen transfer — whether a burst tube, a pulled end fitting or a failed cam seal — creates an immediate fire and burn risk from the escaping material. Hose assemblies must be visually inspected before every fill or discharge cycle and replaced at the first sign of outer cover damage, fitting movement or cam lever wear.
Function
During pump-assisted discharge to road base or prime coat spreader bars, the hose carries full pump delivery pressure with cyclic pressure pulses as spray section valves open and close. The camlock coupling design locks the hose to the tanker or tank fitting with two lever-actuated cams that engage a grooved adapter, providing a positive sealing force without thread engagement — threads are vulnerable to cross-threading and bitumen fouling on site. Viton (FKM) cam groove seals retain flexibility and sealing integrity at sustained temperatures up to 200 °C (392 °F), unlike standard NBR seals which harden and crack in service.
Construction & quality
Hose inner tube: smooth-bore PTFE or high-temperature NBR compound, bitumen-rated for full temperature range. Reinforcement: one or two layers of stainless steel wire braid to the required working pressure. Outer cover: black EPDM or thermoplastic compound, heat-resistant and abrasion-resistant for site conditions. End fittings: 316 stainless steel ferrules, hydraulically swaged — not clamped — onto the hose body for a permanent crimp bond. Camlock bodies: aluminium for standard service or 316 stainless steel for high-corrosion coastal or tropical environments. Cam seals: Viton (FKM) compound, 230 °C rated. Standard lengths 3 m, 5 m and 6 m (10 ft, 16 ft, 20 ft) to order.
When to replace
- Outer cover shows blistering, deep cracking or visible wire braid — hose tube integrity is compromised
- Hose body becomes stiff and inflexible — inner tube material has aged and hardened
- Bitumen seep or drip from the crimped ferrule or the end fitting to hose junction
- Cam levers fail to lock fully or spring open under pressure — cam groove worn or bent
- Viton cam seal torn, extruded or hardened — visible bitumen leakage at the coupling mating face
Compatibility & fitment
Supplied in 50 mm and 75 mm ID (2 in and 3 in) to match the fill and discharge valve connections on all AVL-BPD tank sizes; camlock type letter and coupling-end configuration — male or female — matched to the tanker coupling standard used in the customer's supply chain.
Why buy from Avelta
Every hose assembly is hydraulic-pressure tested at 1.5× working pressure after crimping, with a test certificate supplied; Viton FKM cam seals are specified as standard — not NBR — ensuring compatibility across all bitumen grades and sustained high-temperature service.
