Overview
The PTO Shaft and Universal Joint Assembly is the mechanical power-transmission link between the truck chassis Power Take-Off (PTO) gearbox output flange and the input shaft of the bitumen pump unit mounted on the AVL-BPD distributor frame. On a truck-mounted bitumen pressure distributor the bitumen circulating pump, spray-bar feed pump, and in many configurations the heating system combustion-air blower, are all driven from the truck's main engine through the PTO. The shaft assembly spans the centre-to-centre distance between the PTO output and the pump gearbox input, compensating for the angular and axial misalignment that is inherent in the truck-chassis-to-body interface and which changes under chassis flex and suspension travel.
The assembly comprises a splined slip-yoke section, two universal joints (Cardan joints) at the drive and driven ends, a seamless midshaft tube, and a protective outer sleeve. The slip yoke accommodates length variation caused by chassis flex and road-induced movement, while the universal joints allow the shaft to transmit torque continuously through angular offsets that are present in the installed geometry. The assembly is sized and balanced to operate reliably across the PTO speed and torque range of the truck chassis to which the AVL-BPD is mounted.
Function
The PTO shaft transmits continuous rotational torque from the truck engine — typically at PTO output speeds of 500–1,000 rpm depending on truck make and engaged gear — to the bitumen pump assembly, sustaining the flow of heated bitumen from the tank through the spray bar and return circuit. Correct torque transmission maintains pump output pressure in the target range of 2.5–4.5 bar at the spray-bar manifold, which is necessary for a consistent volumetric application rate across the full spray width. Any reduction in drive efficiency caused by worn universal-joint needle rollers, a corroded slip yoke, or an out-of-balance shaft results in pressure fluctuation, non-uniform bitumen spray, surface-finish defects in the finished pavement, and potential pump-seal damage from torque shock. Reliable shaft condition is therefore directly linked to application-rate accuracy, road-surface quality, and unplanned downtime risk on active projects.
Construction & quality
The midshaft tube is manufactured from seamless ERW carbon steel tube, typically 65–80 mm OD with a 3.5 mm nominal wall, dynamically balanced to ISO 1940 G6.3 or better at 1,000 rpm to minimise vibration at operating speed. Splined slip-yoke splines are machined to DIN 5480 involute profile on a CNC turning and broaching line, then case-hardened by induction to 58–62 HRC at the tooth surface with a controlled case depth of 0.8–1.2 mm, retaining a tough core for impact resistance. Universal joint crosses (spider kits) are drop-forged from 20CrMnTi or equivalent alloy steel and heat-treated to a core hardness of 28–32 HRC; needle-roller bearing cups are precision-ground and assembled with pre-packed grease under clean-room-adjacent conditions. Each bearing cup is retained with an external circlip to SAE J901 geometry and positively located against axial migration. Zerk grease nipples to DIN 71412 form A are fitted to every joint cross for in-service relubrication without disassembly. Yoke flanges are machined to match the OEM PTO output-flange bolt-circle diameter and face-run tolerance of the truck platform specified at order. The complete midshaft exterior receives a zinc-phosphate conversion coat followed by a two-pack epoxy primer for corrosion resistance in continuous outdoor and road-spray service.
When to replace
- Vibration or periodic shudder felt through the truck cab or distributor body frame during pump operation, particularly at a specific engine speed band
- Metallic clunking or knocking noise at PTO engagement or disengagement, indicating excessive backlash in one or both universal joint crosses
- Visible radial play when the cold shaft is rocked by hand with the PTO disengaged and the pump input locked — more than 0.3 mm angular free-play signals bearing-cup wear
- Grease leakage from universal joint bearing-cup seals or from the slip-yoke sealing boot, accompanied by surface oxidation or pitting on exposed needle rollers
- Unexplained fluctuation in bitumen pump output pressure with no fault found on the hydraulic circuit, pump seals, or spray-bar valves — pointing to intermittent torque interruption at the shaft
