Overview

The bitumen inlet strainer is installed on the suction side of the main gear pump, between the tank outlet and the pump inlet on the AVL-BPD. Its basket element intercepts solid particles — grit, pipe scale, hardened bitumen fragments and mineral impurities — that would otherwise score gear pump running faces, jam section valve seats or block nozzle orifices. The strainer body incorporates a quick-release bolted cover for on-site basket cleaning or element replacement without disturbing the pump or pipe connections.

Even road-grade bitumen loaded from tanker trucks can carry fine debris, particularly on remote site operations where supply chain quality control is variable. Regular inspection and cleaning of the strainer basket is a low-cost routine that directly protects the machine's most expensive components.

Function

A single piece of aggregate or metallic scale that reaches the gear pump's close-running clearances — typically 0.03–0.08 mm between gear teeth and housing bore — can score the bore, accelerate internal slip and reduce pump flow efficiency progressively. Over time, pump slip losses increase the power required per unit of flow, reduce delivery pressure and ultimately cause pump failure. The inlet strainer is therefore a critical protective device. Conversely, a clogged strainer basket is itself a cause of pump cavitation and flow drop, so both conditions — blocked and absent filtration — reduce pump life.

Construction & quality

Body: cast iron or carbon steel with external epoxy coat for corrosion resistance. Basket element: 304 stainless steel perforated sheet with welded support rim, mesh opening 1.5 mm or 3.0 mm to order, basket depth 100–150 mm. Cover: bolted flanged lid with replaceable nitrile gasket. Drain plug: BSP ½" for safe basket removal without full line drain. Optional differential pressure tapping connections are available for fitting a clog-detection indicator. Body rated PN10.

When to replace

  • Pump suction pressure drops or pump runs noisily — audible cavitation from blocked basket
  • Application rate falls despite correct pump speed and delivery-side pressure
  • Visible debris accumulation in basket on routine inspection
  • Basket mesh shows tears or inward distortion — collapsed under high differential pressure
  • Cover gasket weeps bitumen at the lid flange joint

Compatibility & fitment

Body sizes DN50 and DN65 cover the full AVL-BPD pump inlet range; Avelta supplies replacement basket elements separately for routine cleaning cycles, as well as complete body-plus-basket assemblies for strainer renewal.

Why buy from Avelta

Basket elements are supplied in matched pairs — one fitted, one field spare — with each complete assembly order; stainless mesh is resistance-welded for permanent joint integrity, not mechanically folded or clipped, preventing in-service unravelling.
