Overview
The platform and ladder system provides safe working access to all elevated maintenance points on the drum mix plant: the drum feed-end hood and burner, the discharge-end chute, the baghouse or cyclone top, the hot elevator head, and the control cabin level where applicable. The system typically comprises one or more longitudinal elevated walkway platforms running the length of the drum along one or both sides, with cross-over platforms at each service point and caged vertical ladders connecting plant grade to the elevated walkway level.
On the AVL-DMP the drum operating height and required access points are fixed at the design stage, and the platform and ladder system is engineered to match the plant layout drawing. The Avelta standard design incorporates guardrails at 1,000–1,100 mm height, a mid-rail, kick-plate, and self-closing cage hoops on ladders exceeding 3,000 mm in free height — principal protective features recognised across international markets.
Function
A well-designed platform and ladder system reduces the time required for daily inspection and maintenance checks, directly influencing plant uptime: when access to riding rings, seal rope, and burner components requires improvised rigging, operators defer these checks and defects are found only after secondary damage has accumulated. Safe, level access also reduces the risk of dropped tools damaging the drum shell, flights, or conveyor belts. Platforms sized for two-person working allow simultaneous inspection, measurement, and repair tasks, further reducing maintenance time per shift.
Construction & quality
Primary structure: hot-dip galvanised mild steel (IS 2062 / ASTM A36), minimum 85 µm average zinc coating, processed after fabrication for complete coverage at all weld zones and cut edges. Platform decking: open-mesh grating, 25 × 3 mm bearing bar at 30 mm centres with 5 × 5 mm square-twist transverse bar, allowing dust and rain to pass through freely. Grating panels are 1,200 × 600 mm standard sections bolted to supporting angle frame for individual replacement. Handrails and kick-plates: 40 mm NB pipe top rail at 1,000–1,100 mm, mid-rail at 500 mm, 100 mm pressed-steel kick-plate. Ladder rungs: 25 mm square-section bar, 300 mm wide, at 225–300 mm pitch. Caged ladder: semi-circular hoops at 900 mm pitch on all ladder sections above 3,000 mm free height. All fasteners: stainless-steel A4 grade M12–M16.
When to replace
- White-rust or red-rust corrosion breaking through the zinc coating at cut edges or weld zones
- Bent or missing guardrail sections or mid-rails requiring urgent isolation of the affected walkway
- Grating panels with broken transverse bars or loose bearing bars creating a trip or fall-through hazard
- Rung wear exceeding 20% of original cross-section in high-traffic ladder sections
- Loose bolted connections at landing-to-structure interfaces from vibration-induced fatigue
