Overview
Safety guards are fixed-enclosure or interlocked-panel covers fitted over all exposed rotating and moving parts of the drum mix plant: the chain-and-sprocket drive assembly, the gearbox output coupling, the riding-ring and trunnion-roller interface zones, and the drum-end seal flanges. Their function is to prevent accidental contact between personnel and rotating machinery during production and to contain any chain, sprocket tooth, or coupling material that becomes a projectile in the event of a mechanical failure.
The AVL-DMP drum rotates continuously for 6–16 hours per shift, and the drive chain and sprocket combination transmits significant torque. Guards in this zone must be robust enough to resist incidental mechanical contact, provide clear sightlines for the operator to observe chain and sprocket condition through inspection windows without opening the guard, and allow rapid lubrication access without requiring full guard removal.
Function
A missing or damaged safety guard constitutes a regulatory non-compliance at virtually every project site and road-construction contract worldwide. Beyond personnel protection, guards prevent foreign objects — aggregate fragments, tools, insulation strands — from entering the chain-and-sprocket mesh zone, where they would cause tooth damage, chain stretch, or chain derailment. At the riding-ring zone, guards prevent aggregate overflow from the drum end from packing between the ring and roller, which causes abrupt force spikes and ring-face scoring. Guard condition must be verified at every pre-shift inspection as a non-negotiable operational requirement.
Construction & quality
Guard panels fabricated from 2–3 mm cold-rolled mild steel sheet for coupling and chain-inspection zones, and 4–6 mm structural plate for the riding-ring and high-torque chain drive guard enclosures. All edges are folded or fitted with PVC edge trim to eliminate sharp contact hazards. Hinged access panels use captive quarter-turn stainless fasteners for lubrication access without tools. Inspection ports are fitted with 50 × 100 mm toughened polycarbonate windows (3 mm thick) held in rubber gaskets, allowing visual chain inspection with the guard closed. Guard framework: 40 × 40 × 4 mm angle iron, bolted to the base frame or support structure. Surface finish: degreased, two-pack epoxy paint, signal yellow RAL 1003 conforming to machinery safety colour coding.
When to replace
- Dents or through-holes in panels from aggregate projectile impact or maintenance incidents
- Fastener failure causing panels to rattle or lift away from the frame during drum operation
- Polycarbonate inspection windows cracked, yellowed, or opaque from UV or bituminous fume exposure
- Corrosion at folded panel edges in high-humidity or coastal site environments
- Hinge failure causing the guard door to sag open during plant operation
Compatibility & fitment
Safety guard sets are designed and dimensioned to the specific drive sprocket size, chain pitch, coupling diameter, and riding-ring clearance for all AVL-DMP models; Avelta supplies full guard sets or individual replacement panels with pre-drilled attachment holes.
Why buy from Avelta
Avelta guards are supplied with captive quick-release fasteners on all lubrication-access panels, reducing the time and temptation to run the plant with guards removed during routine chain oiling; polycarbonate inspection windows are pre-fitted before dispatch.
