Overview
The bitumen pump mechanical seal kit contains all elastomeric and mechanical sealing components required to rebuild the shaft seal on the AVL-MAP's hot-oil-heated bitumen transfer and circulation pump. This pump operates continuously during plant production, circulating binder at 150–180 °C (302–356 °F) and 3–8 bar — conditions placing severe demands on both carbon-face elements and elastomeric seals.
A typical kit includes the rotating seal ring, stationary seat, compression spring, retaining collar and all associated O-rings and gaskets for a single pump rebuild. Because seal failure at this location results in hot bitumen spray, fire risk and abrupt production stoppage, a seal kit should be maintained as mandatory on-site spares inventory at all operating plants.
Function
The mechanical seal prevents bitumen from migrating along the pump shaft from the pressurised pump cavity to atmosphere and the motor bearing housing. It does this by maintaining a lapped-face contact between a rotating carbon graphite ring and a stationary silicon carbide seat, loaded by a precision compression spring. As seal faces wear or elastomeric elements harden and crack under continuous heat exposure, leakage begins — initially as a seeping binder film around the shaft housing and escalating to uncontrolled spray if ignored. Timely seal kit replacement, typically every 1 500–2 000 operating hours or at first evidence of seeping, protects the pump shaft from binder-borne corrosion and avoids the far greater cost of complete pump replacement.
Construction & quality
Rotating face: resin-impregnated carbon graphite for smooth break-in and low friction against the mating seat. Stationary seat: reaction-bonded silicon carbide (SiC) with face flatness lapped to ≤ 0.6 μm Ra for reliable fluid-film sealing. Spring: Inconel 625 or 316 stainless steel to resist corrosion and high-temperature fatigue through repeated thermal cycling. O-rings: Viton 75-Shore A compound or PTFE-encapsulated seals rated to 200 °C (392 °F) continuous service. All components are packed as matched, serialised kits with a fitment torque card. Dimensions conform to DIN 24960 / ISO 3069 for common pump shaft diameters.
When to replace
- Visible bitumen seepage or wet binder film forming around the pump shaft housing.
- Carbonised or discoloured binder residue accumulating at the shaft seal exit point.
- Squealing or rattling pump noise indicating dry-running of the seal face.
- Elevated pump motor current draw suggesting increased shaft drag from a swollen or seized seal element.
- Persistent binder odour near the pump skid during normal operating conditions.
Compatibility & fitment
Seal kits are specified by pump shaft diameter and model; Avelta cross-references the customer's pump make and model to supply the correct face dimensions, spring load and elastomer grade for the AVL-MAP bitumen circuit across all plant sizes.
Why buy from Avelta
Avelta seal kits use genuine SiC seats with verified face flatness — not lower-grade alumina seats that wear prematurely in sustained hot-bitumen service. Stock is maintained across all common shaft sizes for rapid international dispatch.
