Overview
The pugmill mixing paddle tip is the sacrificial wear element at the working end of each paddle arm inside the AVL-MAP's twin-shaft pugmill mixer. Tips directly contact and work the hot aggregate-bitumen blend during each mixing cycle, subjecting them to combined impact and abrasion from sharp stone particles coated with high-viscosity bitumen at 150–170 °C (302–338 °F).
A standard AVL-MAP pugmill carries 16–32 paddle tips depending on shaft length and blade arrangement. Tips are attached to paddle arms via a through-bolt or taper-fit system, making individual tip replacement straightforward — typically 5–15 minutes per tip without removing the paddle arm from the shaft.
Function
Paddle tips impart both velocity and shear to the aggregate-bitumen charge. Their swept geometry determines how thoroughly each aggregate particle is coated with bitumen in the available mixing time — typically 30–60 seconds per batch or calculated retention time in continuous pugmill designs. A worn tip loses material volume, reducing the effective swept radius and creating under-mixed zones where aggregate particles receive insufficient binder coating. Incompletely coated aggregate leads to asphalt mix deficient in binder film thickness, reducing pavement durability and expected service life. Tips are a low-cost, high-frequency replacement item — their timely replacement protects the far more expensive paddle arm and shaft from direct aggregate contact.
Construction & quality
Cast from high-chrome white iron (Cr 25–28 %, C 2.5–3.0 %) using lost-wax or shell-mould casting to achieve the precise curved blade geometry required for the pugmill design. Bulk hardness: 600–700 HBW (HV 650–720). Castings are heat-treated to develop a martensitic chromium-carbide microstructure (M7C3 carbide phase) that provides superior wear resistance in the combined impact-abrasion regime of a pugmill, outperforming plain high-manganese tips in this specific application. Bolt holes are accurately cored to maintain mounting concentricity. Each tip is individually weighed and mass-matched in sets to limit rotational imbalance on the paddle shafts.
When to replace
- Tip nose-to-arm-face length reduced by 20 % or more from new dimensions — measure with calipers at each scheduled service.
- Visible chipping, cracking or spalling of the chrome iron on any individual tip.
- Mix coating quality deteriorating — aggregate particles with uncoated faces visible in sampled mix at the pugmill discharge.
- Pugmill motor current or power draw increasing at constant production rate, indicating tips no longer moving material efficiently.
- Audible grinding or irregular heavy impacts from the pugmill chamber, suggesting worn tips making arm contact with aggregate.
Compatibility & fitment
Paddle tips are matched to the bolt circle, shank profile and overall length of the paddle arm in use; Avelta supplies tips in mass-matched sets for all AVL-MAP pugmill shaft configurations across 40–120 TPH plant sizes.
Why buy from Avelta
Avelta tips are poured in controlled chromium-carbon chemistry heats and hardness-tested per batch, ensuring the 600–700 HBW range is consistently achieved — not approximated with a lower-chrome alloy that wears two to three times faster under identical operating conditions.
