Overview

The paddle tips are the primary wear elements of the twin-shaft mixer in the AVL-WMM plant. Mounted at the outer end of each paddle arm via bolted tip holders, they are the first point of contact with the aggregate-water blend as the counter-rotating shafts cut and fold the mix. Because each tip traces an arc through dense crushed aggregate — stone sizes up to 40 mm — at shaft speeds of 35–55 RPM, tip wear rate directly governs both mix quality and planned maintenance intervals.

Avelta supplies paddle tips in sets matched to the shaft population of the specific mixer model, typically 16 to 32 tips per set. Each tip set covers one complete replacement cycle so that all tips are changed simultaneously, preserving the symmetric mixing geometry that WMM grading specifications demand.

Function

The paddle tips transfer kinetic energy from the rotating shafts into the aggregate-water matrix, breaking up agglomerations, folding in the optimum moisture content, and propelling the mix toward the discharge gate. Worn or broken tips reduce the effective mixing radius, lowering throughput consistency and causing under-mixed batches that fail compacted density targets. They also expose the trough liner beneath to accelerated direct aggregate contact. Timely tip replacement is the single highest-impact maintenance action in the mixing unit.

Construction & quality

Cast from 13% manganese (Hadfield) steel conforming to ASTM A128 Grade B-3 or equivalent. Nominal pre-service hardness is 200–220 HB, work-hardening to 450–550 HB under service impact. Tips are investment-cast or sand-cast to a net-near-shape and finish-machined on the bolt mounting faces to ±0.3 mm. A controlled quench-anneal cycle ensures a fully austenitic matrix and eliminates brittle carbide networks at grain boundaries. Each tip is visually and dimensionally inspected before packaging. Bolt hardware (M20, Grade 10.9) is included in every set.

When to replace

  • Tip length reduction greater than 15 mm from new nominal dimension
  • Visible cracking, spalling, or chunking at the tip face
  • Inconsistent moisture distribution in the discharge sample
  • Increased mixer motor amperage draw at the same feed rate and shaft speed
  • Visible grooves worn into the trough liner directly beneath the tip path

Compatibility & fitment

Fits AVL-WMM 100, 150, 200, 300, and 400 TPH models; Avelta supplies OEM-specification and replacement-fit sets matched to the customer's shaft diameter, arm configuration, and tip-holder bolt pattern.

Why buy from Avelta

Avelta paddle tips are poured to the same Mn13 alloy specification used in the original plant build and heat-treated in-house to verified austenitic matrix quality. Sets are despatched globally with express-freight options to minimise unplanned downtime at the mixing unit.
