Overview
The burner nozzle and atomiser are the terminal components of the drum dryer's combustion system, responsible for reducing liquid fuel (light fuel oil, heavy fuel oil, or waste oil) to a fine, combustible mist — or shaping the gas flame for dual-fuel operation — and introducing it into the drum firing hood in the precise geometry required for stable, efficient combustion. The burner may be rated from 3 MW to 25 MW depending on plant capacity. For rotary burners, atomisation is achieved by a high-speed spinning disc that throws fuel outward by centrifugal force; for gun-type pressure-jet burners, a precision-orifice nozzle plate converts fuel pressure directly to spray energy.
The nozzle set determines fuel flow rate at rated pressure, atomisation droplet size (Sauter mean diameter), and flame geometry — the three parameters that govern combustion quality, drum heat distribution, and specific fuel consumption across the full range of plant outputs from minimum to maximum TPH.
Function
Atomiser quality directly determines combustion efficiency, flame stability, and specific fuel consumption per tonne of hot mix produced. A worn or fouled nozzle produces large fuel droplets that burn incompletely, raising carbon monoxide output, depositing carbon scale on the drum interior and flights near the firing hood, and reducing drying efficiency. Incorrect flame shape from a worn or damaged atomiser disc or pressure-jet tip causes flame impingement on drum shell or flights, leading to localised overheating, metal fatigue, and distortion of flights near the burner. Maintaining clean, correctly-sized nozzle orifices and a balanced atomiser disc is one of the highest-return, lowest-cost maintenance actions available to a plant operator.
Construction & quality
Rotary atomiser disc: forged or machined alloy steel with precision-machined peripheral atomising slots or serrations, case-hardened to 60–64 HRC on contact surfaces, dynamically balanced to G1.0 or better at the operating speed of 3000–6000 RPM, driven by the burner motor via a rigid coupling. Pressure-jet nozzle: 316 stainless steel body with hardened orifice plate in precipitation-hardened stainless (1.4542 or equivalent), flow-rated at 1–20 kg/h at specified line pressure, thread BSP 1/4" to 3/4" per flow rate. Gas nozzle tip: high-alloy heat-resistant steel (1.4841 or equivalent) rated to 900 °C short-term surface temperature. All nozzle types and atomiser discs are flow-tested and rated before dispatch.
When to replace
- Measurable increase in specific fuel consumption (litres or kg per tonne of dried aggregate) at constant aggregate moisture and feed rate
- Flame instability — pulsing, lifting off the register, or extinguishing under normal air setting — indicating degraded atomisation
- Carbon or coke scale accumulation on the burner face, front-drum flights, or drum shell near the firing hood
- Nozzle orifice showing visible enlargement or out-of-round profile when checked against a no-go gauge
- Stack showing elevated opacity, dark smoke plume, or elevated CO reading at the stack monitor during steady production
