Overview

The cold feed conveyor belt is the primary aggregate transport component in the feed system of a batch asphalt plant. It runs beneath the cold feed bins, receiving metered aggregate from each bin gate and carrying it to the dryer drum inlet. Depending on plant layout it is arranged as an inclined gathering conveyor or a flat-pan collecting conveyor, operating continuously during production at speeds matched to the plant's aggregate feed rate.

In a 160 TPH plant the belt may carry 40–80 tonnes of mixed-graded aggregate per hour across a 10–25 m centre distance. Belt capacity and speed directly determine the plant's feed rate and, consequently, its sustained throughput in TPH. The belt also acts as the primary blending surface where proportioned fractions from adjacent bin gates are combined before entering the drum.

Function

The cold feed conveyor belt delivers a controlled, continuous stream of blended cold aggregate to the drying drum. Its rated capacity and running speed directly set the dryer's feed rate and, in turn, the plant's output in TPH. Belt slippage, tears, or excessive cover wear breaks the material continuity needed for consistent dryer loading, causing drum temperature excursions, increased fuel consumption, and quality inconsistency in the finished mix. Tracking drift and edge wear also generate spillage that accumulates beneath the conveyor, creating housekeeping and fire-risk hazards in the cold-feed bay.

Construction & quality

Multi-ply EP (polyester-polyamide) fabric carcass, 3-ply to 5-ply at 400–1000 N/mm breaking strength per the plant's drive and span requirements. Top cover in SBR or heat-resistant NR/SBR blend, 6–10 mm thick, Grade M or heat-resistant Grade T rated to 120 °C continuous surface temperature. Bottom cover 3–4 mm, plain smooth finish for troughing idler contact. Longitudinal edges vulcanised sealed. Belt joined with mechanical bolt-type fasteners or endless vulcanised splice depending on conveyor design. Standard widths 500 mm to 1200 mm (20 in to 47 in); length cut to order from continuous roll stock.

When to replace

  • Longitudinal cracking or ply delamination along belt edges or centre line
  • Exposed cord or fabric visible through top cover surface from gouging or abrasion
  • Belt tracking drift causing persistent material spillage at one edge
  • Slippage on the drive pulley under load despite correct tensioning
  • Underside stiffening or surface glazing from heat exposure indicating compound degradation

Compatibility & fitment

Supplied in widths and ply ratings to match AVL-ABP models from 40 TPH to 320 TPH; Avelta provides OEM-specification belts and direct-fit replacements cross-matched to the customer's plant series, conveyor centres, and drive pulley diameter.

Why buy from Avelta

Avelta cold-feed belts are manufactured to the same ply count and compound specification as the original plant fitment, ensuring rated feed tonnage and cover life from the first shift. Common widths and grades are held in stock for fast international freight dispatch to minimise production downtime.
