Overview

The drum riding ring — referred to in the asphalt plant industry as a tyre (not a pneumatic tyre) — is a massive annular steel ring that encircles the outer shell of the rotary drying drum. Each drum carries two riding rings, one positioned near the inlet end and one near the outlet end. These rings bear the full rotating weight of the drum shell, the drum flights, and the aggregate burden in process, transmitting it through rolling contact to two support rollers at each ring station. In a 160 TPH plant, the drum assembly loaded with aggregate may weigh 20–35 tonnes, making the riding ring one of the most structurally demanding wearing components in the plant.

The ring is mounted with a deliberate loose-fit (controlled float) on the drum shell, allowing relative thermal expansion between the ring and shell during warm-up and shutdown cycles. Fitted dogs or retaining blocks prevent ring rotation relative to the shell while allowing this radial float.

Function

The riding ring transmits the full dead and live load of the rotating drum to the fixed support frame via the support rollers, providing the precision running surface that enables smooth, low-vibration drum rotation at 5–15 RPM. Ring surface condition determines vibration level, roller wear rate, and bearing loads throughout the drum drivetrain. A worn, cracked, or oval riding ring causes differential loading across the paired rollers at each station, accelerating roller surface wear and bearing damage, inducing drum shell flexure and — if left uncorrected — eventual drum misalignment, seal failure, and catastrophic drivetrain damage.

Construction & quality

Cast from high-carbon alloy steel (equivalent to ASTM A148-90 Grade 90-60 or similar cast steel specification), or fabricated from rolled heavy-section structural plate, continuously submerged-arc welded and then furnace stress-relieved. Machined all over on a horizontal boring mill or CNC lathe to achieve face and bore tolerances of ±0.3 mm concentricity TIR. Running face width 200–450 mm, finished to Ra 3.2 µm. Face hardness 250–320 HB through heat treatment or normalisation. Bore fitted loosely to the drum shell (H7 class loose fit) with keyed dog blocks or lug retainers welded to the shell to prevent ring slippage.

When to replace

  • Visible step wear, scoring, or pitting on the running face contact band
  • Rhythmic radial wobble or periodic vibration pulse at one or both riding ring stations
  • Uneven wear pattern on the paired support rollers — one roller wearing faster than its partner indicates ring eccentricity
  • Crack indications at the ring bore or internal chamfer, detected by visual or dye-penetrant inspection during shutdown
  • Ring slippage or rotation relative to drum shell (loose or fractured retaining dogs)

Compatibility & fitment

Avelta riding rings are machined to match AVL-ABP drum shell diameters from 1.2 m to 2.4 m; OEM-specification bore diameter, face width, and dog-block geometry are confirmed against the customer's drum drawing before machining begins.

Why buy from Avelta

Each Avelta riding ring is finish-machined and TIR-verified on CNC horizontal lathes to the original tolerance callout, ensuring immediate low-vibration running on installation without bed-in grinding work. Large ring dimensions are dispatched on flat-rack or open-top freight containers with lifting lug attachments included.
