Overview
Each drying drum is supported on two pairs of support rollers — four rollers total in a standard two-ring arrangement — positioned symmetrically on either side of each riding ring. The rollers are mounted on heavy-duty plummer-block bearing assemblies fixed to the main support frame. Together the four rollers provide the rolling contact surface that sustains the drum's weight and aggregate burden while allowing rotation at 5–15 RPM throughout continuous production.
The support rollers also serve as the drum alignment reference. Adjusting the skew angle of individual rollers relative to the riding ring generates axial thrust that keeps the drum at the correct axial position within the inlet and outlet hoods, preventing excessive seal wear at either end. Roller-to-ring contact geometry must therefore be maintained precisely, and both the roller surface and the riding ring face must be kept within tolerance to preserve this alignment function.
Function
Support rollers carry the drum's full dead and live load continuously over tens of thousands of operating hours. Worn or failed roller bearings cause drum sag, progressive riding-ring step wear, increased drive motor current, and — if allowed to progress — catastrophic drum drop. Roller surface wear transfers abrasion to the riding ring face, compounding replacement costs across both components. Maintaining roller surface hardness and bearing condition is therefore a direct cost-control measure as well as a safety requirement.
Construction & quality
Roller body: forged or cast alloy steel, machined to a crowned cylindrical profile (crown radius 3–5 m) to distribute contact stress across the roller face width. Surface induction-hardened to 52–58 HRC to a case depth of 5–8 mm, then cylindrically ground to Ra 1.6 µm. Shaft: 42CrMo4 or equivalent alloy steel, journal-ground to h5 tolerance. Bearing: self-aligning spherical roller bearing (ISO 22300 series), C3 internal clearance, grease-lubricated, with labyrinth inner seal and multi-lip outer contact seal, housed in a split or solid cast-iron plummer-block. Grease nipples on housing for in-service regreasing without dismantling. Operating grease: NLGI 2 high-temperature lithium-complex or polyurea bearing grease.
When to replace
- Audible rumble or growl from a bearing housing, increasing in intensity with drum load and operating hours
- Bearing housing surface temperature above 80 °C at 30 °C ambient measured by contact or IR thermometer
- Roller running face showing circumferential scoring, flat spots, or step-wear ridges from riding ring edge contact
- Grease purging past bearing seals that is discoloured black or contains metallic particles on inspection
- Drum riding ring showing asymmetric transverse wear pattern corresponding to a roller edge contact point
Compatibility & fitment
Avelta support roller and bearing assemblies are supplied as complete matched units for AVL-ABP drum support frames; roller diameter, face width, shaft diameter, and plummer-block bolt pattern are all cross-referenced to the customer's drum and frame specification before manufacture.
Why buy from Avelta
Avelta roller assemblies are ground and induction-hardened to OEM case-depth specification, then supplied with the plummer-block pre-packed with high-temperature grease and all seals installed, reducing workshop preparation time on maintenance shutdowns.
