Overview
The burner blower — also referred to as the combustion air blower or forced-draft (FD) fan — is a single-inlet centrifugal fan that draws ambient air and delivers it at elevated static pressure to the burner's combustion air register. It is direct-coupled or V-belt-driven by a dedicated electric motor mounted on a common frame with the burner gun. Air volume and static pressure are matched to the burner's maximum firing rate, with damper or inlet-vane control providing turndown across the operating range.
The blower must maintain air delivery against the back-pressure of the burner register, connecting ducting, and the positive drum pressure at the feed end. Selection of the correct duty point — volume flow in m³/h and total static pressure in Pa — is critical: an under-sized blower causes oxygen deficiency and incomplete combustion, while an oversized blower can extinguish the pilot flame at low firing rates.
Function
Consistent combustion air delivery directly controls flame quality, fuel efficiency, and stack emissions. The blower also provides primary air for flame shape control through the burner register swirl vanes. Blower degradation through impeller erosion, bearing wear, or belt slip causes progressive combustion deterioration that is frequently misdiagnosed as a fuel system problem, resulting in wasted diagnostic time and continued excess fuel consumption.
Construction & quality
Housing and inlet cone: mild steel plate, welded and flanged; internally coated with high-temperature paint. Impeller: backward-curved or radial-tip blades, fabricated mild steel or die-cast aluminium alloy, statically and dynamically balanced to G6.3 or better per ISO 1940. Shaft: EN 8 or EN 19 alloy steel, machined, supported in two grease-lubricated ball or roller bearings. Motor coupling: direct flexible coupling or V-belt drive with adjustable tensioner. Inspection door on housing. Inlet damper or vane control integral or duct-mounted.
When to replace
- Visible erosion, cracking, or deformation of impeller blades on inspection
- Imbalance noise audible as periodic thudding or a tonal vibration at blade-pass frequency
- Reduction in flame intensity or black stack smoke at previously stable burner settings
- Elevated bearing temperature or grease purge from housing end-shields
- V-belt squealing under load or black rubber dust accumulation near the drive
Compatibility & fitment
Blowers are selected to match the combustion air volume and pressure requirements of each AVL-DMP burner rating from 1.5 to 14 MW; Avelta supplies direct replacements matched to the customer's burner set and motor electrical supply specification.
Why buy from Avelta
Avelta burner blowers are dynamically balanced and test-run against the original burner duty curve before despatch, confirming correct airflow and static pressure at the operating point.
