Overview

Roller bearings used in drum mix plant trunnion and thrust applications are predominantly double-row spherical roller bearings housed in split plummer-block (pillow-block) housings. The spherical roller design provides the angular misalignment tolerance (up to 1.5–2.5° depending on series) needed to accommodate shaft deflection and frame settlement without transferring bending moments into the bearing races. Bearings are selected for their C (basic dynamic load rating) and C0 (static load rating) values against the calculated equivalent bearing load for the drum weight and plant capacity.

Plummer-block housings are supplied as part of the bearing assembly, split horizontally to allow installation without disturbing shaft alignment. Re-lubrication channels, grease nipples, and labyrinth or felt-ring end seals are standard features on all Avelta bearing assemblies.

Function

Roller bearings convert rotational motion to rolling-element contact, minimising friction and heat generation at shaft support points. Bearing failure in this location results in rapid roller seizure, drum runout, and — if undetected — catastrophic shaft or housing damage. Correct bearing selection, installation preload, and scheduled re-lubrication intervals are the primary determinants of trunnion system service life. Early detection through temperature monitoring and vibration analysis can prevent secondary damage to shafts and riding rings.

Construction & quality

Bearing type: double-row spherical roller bearings, medium series (22200 or 23000 series, to ISO 15 designation). Inner and outer rings from bearing-grade through-hardened alloy steel (100Cr6 / AISI 52100 equivalent); rolling elements precision-ground, supplied as a matched set. Cage: pressed steel or machined brass depending on speed and load classification. Housing: cast iron or cast steel, bolted split-type; bore machined to H7, housing OD mating surface to js6 tolerance. Pre-packed with NLGI 2 lithium complex or polyurea bearing grease.

When to replace

  • Rising noise level at bearing housing — from smooth hum to rough grumble or intermittent squealing
  • Elevated housing temperature above 80°C detected by hand touch or IR thermometer
  • Grease purge from housing seals, discoloured with metal particles or black oxidation
  • Detectable shaft or roller radial play in excess of 0.3 mm when drum is stationary
  • Visible spalling, pitting, or race surface damage when the housing is opened for inspection

Compatibility & fitment

Bearings are specified by shaft diameter and calculated load for each drum size; Avelta supplies matched bearing-and-housing assemblies for all AVL-DMP trunnion and thrust stations across 60–200 TPH plant sizes.

Why buy from Avelta

Avelta sources roller bearings from traceable manufacturers and pre-packs housings with the correct grade of grease before despatch, supplying a ready-to-install assembly that eliminates field contamination risk during installation.
