Overview

The burner set is the complete combustion system fitted at the discharge end of the AVL-DMP drum. It generates the sustained, high-temperature flame directed axially into the rotating drum that dries and superheats aggregate to the required mixing temperature — typically 155–175°C for aggregate leaving the drum. The assembly comprises the burner head, combustion air register, fuel manifold, ignition assembly, and flame-monitoring provisions, all integrated on a common gun frame that mounts to the drum feed-end housing.

Avelta burner sets are designed for high-turndown operation (ratio up to 5:1) to accommodate variation in aggregate moisture content and feed rate encountered across project sites. They are available in configurations for light diesel oil (LDO/HSD), furnace oil (FO/HFO), light fuel oil (LFO), and dual-fuel (diesel/gas) duty to suit the fuel supply available at each project location.

Function

The burner must deliver a stable, well-shaped flame that does not impinge on the drum shell or aggregate bed. Correct air-to-fuel ratio control ensures complete combustion, minimising fuel cost and stack opacity. An unstable or incorrectly set burner produces uneven aggregate temperature across the drum cross-section, blue-smoke emissions, refractory overheating, and excessive fuel consumption — all of which directly affect production economics and, where monitored, regulatory compliance with emission standards.

Construction & quality

Burner gun body: stainless steel and heat-resistant cast iron in the flame zone; mild steel for the outer housing. Combustion air register: adjustable swirl vanes, cast alloy construction. Fuel lines and manifold: seamless steel tube, rated 25 bar working pressure. Ignition electrodes: ceramic-insulated, with Inconel or stainless steel tips. UV/IR flame sensor mounting boss is integral to the gun body. An insulated outer jacket on the gun barrel reduces heat loss at the burner tube. All internal surfaces in the flame zone are lined with high-temperature ceramic fibre or castable refractory rated to 1 200°C continuous.

When to replace

  • Visible flame instability — lifting, pulsing, or extinguishing at stable load settings
  • Blue or black smoke at the stack indicating incomplete combustion or excess fuel
  • Increasing fuel consumption required to achieve the same aggregate discharge temperature
  • Burn-through or deformation visible on the burner tip, register vanes, or gun body on inspection
  • Ignition failure requiring multiple re-try cycles on cold-morning startup

Compatibility & fitment

Avelta burner sets are rated and configured to match the thermal duty of AVL-DMP plants from 60 to 200 TPH; replacement sets are supplied matched to the drum diameter, fuel type, firing rate, and electrical supply of the customer's unit.

Why buy from Avelta

Avelta burner sets are assembled and test-fired before despatch, with air-register settings and fuel-line pressure documented in a supplied commissioning datasheet — minimising on-site setup time and confirming correct operation before the unit leaves the works.
