Overview

Trunnion rollers — also called support rollers or riding rollers — are the primary load-bearing elements that support the rotating drum of the AVL-DMP. Mounted in pairs beneath the drum's riding rings (tyres), they carry the combined weight of the drum shell, internal flights, retained feed material, and thermal mass — typically ranging from 8 to 35 tonnes depending on plant capacity and drum loading. Their correct contact geometry, surface hardness, and lubrication condition determine drum alignment, riding ring wear rate, and the power demand of the main drive.

Each roller in the set is mounted on a keyed shaft, which itself rotates on plummer-block or self-aligning spherical roller bearings anchored to the trunnion frame. The roller surface contacts the hardened drum riding ring in a line-contact arrangement, and rollers are adjusted laterally and angularly to set drum skew and axial float within design limits.

Function

Trunnion rollers transfer drum weight to the plant base frame while allowing free, low-friction rotation. Worn or eccentric rollers increase drum runout, accelerate riding ring wear, increase drive motor current, and can cause drum shell cracking from cyclic bending. A correctly matched and properly set roller set is foundational to productive, low-maintenance plant operation; replacing rollers before they reach the spalling stage protects the significantly more expensive riding ring from secondary damage.

Construction & quality

Roller body: heat-treated alloy steel (EN 9 / AISI 1045 equivalent), forged or cast, turned and ground to h6 diameter tolerance. Surface induction hardened to 50–55 HRC to a case depth of 4–6 mm; core remains tough at 25–30 HRC to resist impact loading. Roller bore machined to H7 for keyed shaft fit. Both end faces are faced and chamfered. The roller OD is cylindrical to within 0.05 mm TIR. Available with a machined face-groove for tapered riding ring contact, or a plain barrel profile to match the OEM drum tyre profile.

When to replace

  • Flat spots, spalling, or surface pitting visible on roller OD during routine inspection
  • Drum riding ring exhibiting an uneven or off-centre circumferential wear track, indicating roller misalignment
  • Abnormal rise in main drive motor current during constant-load operation
  • Audible rumbling or irregular vibration felt at the trunnion frame during drum rotation
  • Excessive lateral drum migration despite adjustment of roller skew angle

Compatibility & fitment

Available for AVL-DMP drum diameters from 1.0 m to 2.2 m (3.3–7.2 ft); roller profile (flat, crowned, or tapered) and shaft centre distance are matched to the customer's specific drum and riding ring dimensions.

Why buy from Avelta

Avelta trunnion rollers are finish-ground after heat treatment to maintain OEM diameter and cylindricity tolerances, ensuring correct line contact with the riding ring and consistent drive load from the first revolution in service.
