Overview

The burner nozzle — also referred to as the fuel atomiser or spray nozzle — is the terminal component of the fuel delivery train, converting pressurised liquid fuel into a fine, evenly distributed spray of droplets that mix with combustion air and combust efficiently. In pressure-atomising systems (the most common configuration on drum mix plants using LDO or HSD), the nozzle is a precision-machined swirl-chamber insert through which fuel passes at high pressure (typically 8–18 bar) and exits through a calibrated orifice as a hollow-cone or solid-cone spray pattern. Nozzle flow rate is precisely characterised in litres per hour at a reference pressure of 7 bar.

On furnace oil (HFO) burners, mechanical-return atomising nozzles or steam-atomising nozzles are used to handle the higher viscosity of heavy fuel. Avelta stocks the standard nozzle types used on AVL-DMP burner sets and can supply replacement nozzles sized to the original burner firing rate.

Function

The nozzle's spray angle, droplet size distribution, and flow rate govern flame shape, length, and combustion completeness. A worn, blocked, or incorrectly rated nozzle is one of the most common single causes of elevated fuel consumption, black smoke, and burner flame instability in drum mix plants. Nozzles are a low-cost, high-impact maintenance item and should be replaced on a scheduled interval — typically every season or 1 500 operating hours — rather than run until visible failure.

Construction & quality

Body and swirl insert: stainless steel (AISI 303 or 316) or hardened brass, precision-machined to tolerances of ±0.01 mm on orifice diameter. Orifice: laser-drilled or EDM-formed for a precise, burr-free flow coefficient. Spray angle: 45°, 60°, 80°, or 90° hollow or solid cone as specified by the burner design. Integral 100-mesh stainless steel strainer screen upstream of the swirl chamber. External thread standardised to match the burner nozzle holder. Flow rate marked on the hex body in USGPH at 7 bar reference pressure.

When to replace

  • Visible flame elongation, narrowing, or asymmetric spray pattern at a stable fuel pressure
  • Black or grey smoke at the stack at a constant firing rate and air damper setting
  • Increased fuel consumption required to maintain the same aggregate discharge temperature
  • Nozzle orifice showing visible enlargement or erosion under ×10 magnification
  • Carbonised deposit or partial blockage on the nozzle tip restricting spray symmetry
