Overview
The chain and sprocket set forms the final drive element between the gearbox output shaft sprocket and the drum riding-ring-mounted chain wheel or conveyor head shaft sprocket. Heavy-duty industrial roller chain — ISO 08B to 24B series, or ANSI 40 to 140 series for larger drives — is selected for the torque and pitch-line speed of each application. On larger drum drives, duplex or triplex multi-strand chain is used to share load across strands and reduce unit tension in each link plate.
Sprockets are precision-machined to match the chain pitch and tooth count, and are bored and keyed to the shaft. Chain tension is set via the gearbox or motor mounting position on a sliding base, or via a jockey tensioner. Chain lubrication is by drip oiler, splash-box, or spray system. Inadequate lubrication is the single most common cause of premature chain and sprocket wear in this application.
Function
Correct chain tension, pitch match, and consistent lubrication are the three factors that govern chain drive service life. A worn chain with elongated pitch accelerates sprocket tooth wear rapidly in a self-reinforcing cycle; mismatched chain and sprocket pitch generates high impact loads that cause chain breakage and sudden drive shutdown. Monitoring chain elongation and planning scheduled replacement at the 2–3% elongation limit is the most cost-effective maintenance practice in this part of the plant.
Construction & quality
Chain: ISO-standard precision roller chain, pins and bushes from alloy steel, case hardened to 55–60 HRC; link plates: medium-carbon steel, shot-peened for fatigue life. Connecting link: cotter-pin type or spring-clip, matched to chain grade. Sprockets: medium-carbon steel (C45 / AISI 1045) or alloy steel on high-duty applications, tooth flanks flame- or induction-hardened to 42–48 HRC. Sprocket bore: H7 keyed fit. Tooth profile machined to ISO 606 / ANSI B29.1 involute form.
When to replace
- Chain elongation exceeding 2% of nominal pitch when measured over 10 consecutive links
- Sprocket teeth exhibiting a hooked profile, indicating the chain has been running elongated
- Chain jumping or skipping on the sprocket at regular intervals during normal operation
- Excessive chain sag between sprockets that cannot be corrected by tensioner adjustment
- Rattling or slapping noise from the drive enclosure, particularly on load changes
Compatibility & fitment
Avelta chain and sprocket sets are supplied in the correct pitch, strand count, sprocket tooth count, and bore dimensions for each drive position in AVL-DMP plants from 60 to 200 TPH; chain pitch and sprocket bore specification should be confirmed at order.
Why buy from Avelta
Avelta supplies matched chain-and-sprocket sets cut from the same production batch, ensuring pitch consistency across the mating components and eliminating the common failure mode of new chain running on a worn sprocket tooth profile.
