Overview

The coupling set in the AVL-DMP connects primary drive motor shafts to gearboxes, drum drives, and conveyor systems throughout the plant. Each set comprises two coupling hubs machined to close shaft tolerances and an elastomeric spider or jaw element seated between them, compensating for angular and parallel misalignment while dampening drivetrain shock loads that occur during cold starts and aggregate surges.

Couplings are positioned at every motor-to-gearbox interface in the plant — including the drum rotary drive, cold-feed conveyor drives, and the bitumen pump drive — making them among the highest-frequency replacement items in planned maintenance schedules. Selecting the correct torque rating and bore size at the time of ordering is critical to service life.

Function

The coupling set transmits torque from the drive motor to the driven equipment while simultaneously isolating torsional vibration and absorbing impact loads. In a drum mix plant, aggregate surges, cold-start inertia, and occasional foreign-material jams impose transient shock loads that can be several times the nominal running torque. The elastomeric spider element absorbs these peaks before they reach gearbox internals and shaft bearings. A cracked or degraded spider allows metal-to-metal contact between hubs, transmitting full shock forces into downstream components and accelerating bearing and seal wear throughout the drivetrain. Timely spider replacement is the lowest-cost maintenance action available to extend gearbox overhaul intervals.

Construction & quality

Hubs are precision-machined from EN8 medium-carbon steel (Brinell hardness 179–207 HB), bored and keywayed to H7/k6 interference fits and finished to Ra 1.6 µm on mating faces. Spider jaw elements are moulded from polyurethane (PU) — 92 Shore A for standard-duty conveyor and auxiliary drives, 98 Shore A for high-torque drum and main-drive applications. Hubs receive a zinc-phosphate conversion coating followed by primer and enamel paint for corrosion protection in outdoor, dust-laden environments. Keyways are broached and deburred; bore depths are inspected with go/no-go gauges before despatch. Complete sets are supplied with keys, fasteners, and a retaining ring where applicable.

When to replace

  • Visible cracking, chunking, or permanent compression set on the spider/jaw element
  • Rhythmic vibration or knocking noise from the drivetrain at coupling rotational speed
  • Localised heat at the coupling location during operation, without bearing fault codes
  • Detectable angular or lateral movement between the two hubs when observed under load
  • Oil or solvent contamination on the spider element causing softening or swelling

Compatibility & fitment

Available in sizes to suit AVL-DMP plants from 40 TPH to 160 TPH; Avelta supplies OEM-spec hub bores, keyway dimensions, and spider grades matched to the customer's specific unit and drive configuration, including both standard and heavy-duty spider ratings.

Why buy from Avelta

Avelta coupling sets are manufactured to original design tolerances using certified hub steel and rated PU spider compounds, ensuring drop-in fitment and full torque capacity from the first hour of operation. Stocked inventory across key dispatch hubs means replacement sets reach site within days, not weeks.
