Overview

Electric motors power every rotating drive in the AVL-DMP plant: the main drum drive, cold-feed conveyor belts, aggregate elevator, filler elevator, filler screw conveyors, burner blower, fuel pump, baghouse fan, and bitumen circulation pump. Avelta supplies TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors in IEC frame sizes matched to the power and mounting requirements of each drive position.

Motors are selected to IEC 60034 efficiency and duty ratings. Premium efficiency frames (IE2 or IE3) are supplied as standard for main drive positions where continuous operation makes energy efficiency most relevant. All motors are suitable for use with variable frequency drives (VFDs) where soft-start or speed control is required, and Class F or Class H winding insulation is specified to withstand the harmonic content typical of inverter outputs.

Function

Reliable motor performance underpins every production function in the plant. Motor failure at any critical drive position stops production immediately. Correct motor selection — adequate frame size, insulation class, and service factor for the actual load duty cycle — determines both uptime and total lifetime energy cost. Under-sized or incorrectly protected motors run above rated temperature, degrading winding insulation progressively until a winding fault causes failure.

Construction & quality

Frame: ribbed cast iron or aluminium alloy die-cast; IEC B3 (foot), B5 (flange), or B35 (foot-and-flange) mounting options. Rotor: die-cast aluminium squirrel cage or copper-bar construction on premium high-efficiency frames. Stator winding: copper magnet wire, Class F (155°C) or Class H (180°C) insulation standard. Shaft: alloy steel, single or double extended with keyway, retained centre bores. Bearings: deep-groove ball bearings at both ends, or cylindrical roller bearing (drive end) on larger frames. Enclosure: IP55 minimum; IP65 available for outdoor or high-dust locations. Terminal box: top or side mounting, IP55.

When to replace

  • Motor body too hot to hold hand comfortably for more than three seconds during normal load
  • Insulation resistance to earth below 1 MΩ when measured with a 500V Megger in dry conditions
  • Bearing roughness or intermittent rumble detectable by hand contact on the end-shield
  • Shaft seal grease contamination on motor end-shields or adjacent coupling
  • Starting current significantly higher than the nameplate value indicating a winding or rotor fault
