Overview

The flame sensor is the primary safety device in the AVL-DMP burner management loop. Mounted in a viewing port on the burner gun body, it continuously monitors the combustion flame through optical detection of ultraviolet (UV) or combined UV/infrared (UV/IR) radiation emitted by the flame. Its pulsed analogue or digital output signal is read by the burner management relay or controller. If the flame signal drops below the detection threshold — indicating flame failure, flame lift, or full extinction — the controller immediately closes the fuel valve and initiates purge-and-lockout within the response time defined in the burner safety system design, typically under one second for UV detectors.

Flame sensors must withstand vibration, elevated ambient temperature, and the contamination environment on the burner gun. The optical path must remain clear of fuel vapour condensation, soot, or dust accumulation that would reduce transmission and cause missed detection.

Function

The flame sensor is the plant's primary protection against an uncontrolled accumulation of unburnt fuel in the drum following flame failure. A failed or fouled sensor that either fails to detect a genuine flame (nuisance trip) or fails to detect a genuine flame-out (dangerous failure) either disrupts production unnecessarily or creates a serious safety hazard. This is a life-safety component and must be replaced to specification without substitution.

Construction & quality

Detector head: UV-sensitive Geiger-Müller tube (UV type) or solid-state pyroelectric detector (UV/IR type) in a stainless steel or anodised aluminium body. Viewing window: UV-transmitting quartz glass, hermetically sealed against contamination. Output: pulsed 24V DC or 0–10V analogue depending on model. Housing: IP65 rated. Cable entry: M16 or M20 conduit gland. Operating temperature at the detector head: −20°C to +60°C; additional flame sight-tube thermal insulation is required in high-ambient-temperature zones. Signal cable: 2- or 4-core shielded, rated 105°C.

  • Discoloured, soot-coated, or cracked viewing window visible on physical inspection

  • Physical damage to the detector body or cable from heat exposure or mechanical contact
