Overview
The fuel pump is a positive-displacement gear pump mounted in the burner fuel-supply line between the storage or day tank and the burner nozzle manifold. It draws fuel at low suction pressure and delivers it at the regulated pressure required for atomisation at the burner nozzle — typically 8–20 bar for pressure-atomising nozzles, or at lower pressures (1–5 bar) for rotary-cup atomiser supply. On furnace oil (HFO) systems, a heated jacket on the pump casing is standard to maintain fuel viscosity within the pumping range before it reaches the nozzle.
The pump assembly includes an integral pressure-relief valve that recirculates excess flow back to the suction line, maintaining supply pressure without surges. A suction strainer upstream of the pump protects the gear set from particulate damage and should be inspected and cleaned on a scheduled basis.
Function
Stable, uninterrupted fuel supply at the correct pressure is a prerequisite for consistent atomisation and flame quality. A worn or cavitating pump causes pressure fluctuations that produce flame instability, incomplete combustion, and elevated fuel consumption per tonne of asphalt produced. Below-threshold supply pressure also triggers flame safeguard shutdown, stopping production and requiring manual reset. The fuel pump is a low-cost component relative to the downtime it can cause if neglected.
Construction & quality
Pump body: close-grained cast iron or ductile iron; pump gears: lapped alloy steel, case hardened for fuel compatibility and wear resistance. Shaft seal: mechanical seal or lip seal rated for the fuel type and temperature. Integral pressure-relief valve, factory-set to the required burner supply pressure. Suction and delivery connections: BSP or NPT screwed, or PN16 flanged. Motor: foot-mounted TEFC electric motor, direct-coupled or V-belt driven, 0.75–7.5 kW. Heating jacket on HFO pumps: welded mild steel, rated for steam or electric trace heating.
When to replace
- Burner supply pressure consistently below the set point despite the inlet strainer being clear
- Noisy pump operation — whining, knocking, or cavitation sound not present at commissioning
- Fuel leakage at the shaft seal evidenced by wet or stained pump casing and fuel odour
- Flame instability or frequent safeguard lockout trips at a constant feed rate
- Abnormal motor current overload indicating a seized or heavily worn gear set
Compatibility & fitment
Fuel pumps are selected by fuel type, delivery pressure, and flow rate to match the AVL-DMP burner rating; Avelta supplies OEM-matched and cross-reference replacement pumps for all plant models in metric or imperial connection sizes.
Why buy from Avelta
Avelta fuel pumps are pressure-tested and the relief valve is set to the correct burner supply pressure before despatch, arriving site-ready for direct connection into the existing fuel circuit with no field calibration required.
