Overview
The main drum drive gearbox reduces the high-speed output of the electric motor to the slow rotational speed required by the drum — typically 5–10 RPM. Drum mix plants predominantly use parallel-shaft helical or bevel-helical (right-angle) gearboxes rated for continuous duty under the combined radial and axial loads imposed by the chain or direct gear connection between the gearbox output shaft and the drum drive chain wheel or gear ring.
Avelta also supplies gearboxes for conveyor head shafts, aggregate elevator drives, and filler screw drives across the plant. Each gearbox is selected for its thermal power rating, application service factor (minimum 1.5 on drum duty), and the correct ratio to match motor speed to the required output RPM, with splash-oil lubrication, an oil sight glass, and a breather plug as standard.
Function
The gearbox is the single most expensive rotating drive component in the drum drive train. Incorrect gear ratio, inadequate service factor for the actual load, poor lubrication, or oil seal failure cause premature tooth wear, bearing failure, and oil leakage — all leading to costly unplanned replacement. A correctly selected and maintained gearbox will typically achieve a service life commensurate with that of the plant when lubrication and inspection intervals are observed.
Construction & quality
Housing: close-grained cast iron (Grade 25) or spheroidal graphite (SG) iron for higher-duty units; all mating bores and faces are precision machined. Gears: case-hardened and ground alloy steel, quality grade ISO 1328 Grade 6–8; tooth flank surface hardness 58–62 HRC. Shafts: alloy steel, precision machined, mounted in deep-groove ball or cylindrical/spherical roller bearings. Seals: double-lip oil seals on all external shaft protrusions. Oil level sight glass and drain plug standard. IEC motor flange options (B3/B5/B14/B35) to match the mounting requirement of each drive position.
When to replace
- Rising oil temperature or overheating of the housing during normal loaded operation
- Abnormal noise from the gear mesh zone — whining, clicking, or rumbling not present at commissioning
- Metal particles (swarf or ferrous debris) visible on the magnetic drain plug during an oil change
- Oil seal weeping visible as oil loss and staining around output shaft protrusion
- Increased backlash perceptible as jerk or lash at the drive coupling during load reversal
Compatibility & fitment
Avelta gearboxes are supplied to the ratio, mounting configuration, shaft diameter, and power rating of each drum drive and auxiliary drive position across AVL-DMP plants from 60 to 200 TPH.
Why buy from Avelta
All gearboxes undergo a factory run-in test at rated power before despatch, with oil temperature and noise level recorded — confirming correct assembly and gear mesh quality before the unit leaves the works.
