Overview
The ignition transformer is an epoxy-encapsulated high-voltage transformer mounted in the burner control panel or directly on the burner gun body. On command from the burner management system (BMS) during the ignition sequence, it steps the incoming line voltage (230V or 415V AC) up to 6–10 kV at low current to strike a sustained spark across the ignition electrode gap positioned in the burner combustion air stream. This spark ignites the pilot flame or directly ignites the main fuel spray, depending on the burner configuration installed on the plant.
The transformer operates in short intermittent duty cycles — typically 10–30 seconds per ignition attempt — and its insulation class and thermal rating must be appropriate for this pattern. Transformers mounted on outdoor burner panels must carry at least IP54 enclosure protection.
Function
Reliable ignition is essential for safe burner operation. Burner management systems impose a limited ignition-attempt window (typically 5–10 seconds); if a spark is not established and a flame signal is not received within this period, the system locks out and requires manual reset. A degraded transformer producing intermittent or weak spark output causes repeated lockouts, wasting production time and creating safety delays during cold-morning startups when drum warm-up is on the critical path.
Construction & quality
Core-and-coil assembly: laminated silicon-steel core, high-voltage secondary winding in enamelled copper wire, encapsulated in Class H (180°C) epoxy resin within an IP54 or IP65 ABS or aluminium alloy housing. Primary input: 230V or 415V, 50/60 Hz. Secondary output: 6–10 kV, 20–30 mA short-circuit current. Output leads: high-voltage silicone-insulated cable with spring-loaded push-in or screw-terminal HV connectors. Mounting: DIN-rail or screw-foot plate. Duty cycle rating: S2 intermittent, typically 15-minute rated on/off cycle.
When to replace
- Burner management system repeatedly reaching lockout on startup with no ignition confirmed
- Weak or absent snapping sound from the ignition electrode during the ignition attempt
- Visible cracks, discoloration, or tracking marks on the transformer housing or HV lead insulation
- Measured secondary voltage below rated output when checked with a calibrated HV test meter
- Transformer case running abnormally hot during short ignition sequences, indicating insulation degradation
Compatibility & fitment
Avelta ignition transformers are supplied matched to the input voltage, output voltage, and HV connector type of the burner management relay fitted in the customer's AVL-DMP plant.
Why buy from Avelta
Genuine Avelta ignition transformers are rated for the specific duty cycle of the AVL-DMP burner management system and arrive pre-wired to the correct HV connector type, reducing installation to a direct plug-and-mount replacement.
