Overview
The cold-feed conveyor belt is the primary aggregate transport element linking the cold-feed bins to the drum inlet on the AVL-MAP mobile asphalt plant. This belt operates continuously during production, carrying blended aggregate fractions — stones, grit and sand — at controlled feed rates that directly determine plant output in tonnes per hour.
On a mobile plant, the cold-feed conveyor must handle sharp, angular aggregate (quartzite, basalt, granite) from the bin outlets, withstand return-belt abrasion and spillage, and function reliably across ambient temperatures from –5 °C to +55 °C (23–131 °F). The belt is the feed system's pacemaker: its speed, set by a variable-frequency drive, governs plant output, so any belt failure immediately halts production.
Function
The cold-feed belt must consistently transport the specified aggregate blend at uniform speed without slippage, spillage or excessive stretch. Belt tension is maintained by a gravity or screw take-up unit; correct tension prevents slippage on the drive pulley and excessive sag between idlers that causes spillage and gradation segregation. Abrasion of the top cover reduces load-carrying capacity and increases risk of splice failure; tracking problems accelerate edge wear and can damage idler bearings. Replacing the belt before cover wear reaches carcass ply level avoids the chain failure of belt breakage leading to drum inlet blockage and an unplanned production shutdown.
Construction & quality
Multi-ply EP (polyester-polyamide) carcass, typically EP 400/3 to EP 630/4 (three to four plies rated 400–630 N/mm working strength). Top cover: 8–10 mm Grade M abrasion-resistant rubber to ISO 14890 / DIN 22102, Shore A 60–65, abrasion ≤ 90 mm³ per ISO 4649. Bottom cover: 4 mm anti-abrasion rubber. Edge construction: fully moulded (not cut edges) to reduce ply delamination at belt edges. Belts are supplied in roll form cut to the customer's conveyor length and width, with steel-lace mechanical fasteners or factory-vulcanised joints as specified. Operating temperature range: –20 °C to +60 °C (–4 to +140 °F).
When to replace
- Top cover worn to carcass ply level — visible textile fibres or ply separation on the carrying face.
- Persistent belt tracking deviation to one side despite idler adjustment, indicating uneven cover wear or splice distortion.
- Longitudinal cracks in cover rubber, particularly at belt edges from idler roll contact.
- Opening gaps, lifted fastener hooks or plate delamination at mechanical splice joints.
- Reduced plant output at constant VFD speed setting, indicating belt slippage on the drive pulley.
Compatibility & fitment
Belts are supplied to the width, length and carcass-rating specifications of the AVL-MAP cold-feed system, covering conveyor widths of 500–800 mm across the 40–120 TPH capacity range; Avelta can supply with mechanical lace fasteners or factory-vulcanised ends per operator preference.
Why buy from Avelta
Avelta cold-feed belts are manufactured to ISO 14890 with Grade M covers verified for abrasion resistance against the original specification — not downgraded general-purpose compound that softens and wears rapidly under sharp aggregate. Rolls are dispatched on wooden reels to prevent deformation during sea or overland transit.
