Overview

The vibrating screen mesh deck is the classification element installed in the AVL-MAP's hot-mix screening unit, located above the hot storage bins. Multiple deck levels — typically two or three — sort hot dried aggregate from the drum into the size fractions required by the mix design (for example 0–4 mm, 4–10 mm, 10–20 mm) before weighing and transfer to the pugmill.

Each deck is a tensioned wire mesh or welded-wire panel mounted in a rubber-sealed frame within the vibrating screen box operating at 10–25 Hz. Precise aperture sizing is critical: undersized or worn apertures cause cross-contamination between aggregate fractions, corrupting the mix gradation and causing failures at quality-control testing. Decks are a high-wear consumable — hot aggregate sliding across wire under sustained vibration causes both abrasive wire loss and metal fatigue at wire crossings.

Function

Accurate size separation of hot aggregate is the prerequisite for producing asphalt mixes to gradation specification. If deck wire apertures enlarge through wear or breakage, oversize aggregate passes to the fine fraction and coarsens the mix gradation, affecting voidage, stability and surface texture in the finished pavement. Broken wires create open holes that cause severe cross-contamination. Regular wash-down inspection and prompt replacement of worn or broken decks ensures that hot-storage bins are consistently supplied with correctly graded material, preventing costly mix rejections and pavement performance failures.

Construction & quality

Screening wire: drawn high-carbon spring steel (C 0.70–0.90 %) for standard duty, or 304/316 stainless steel for corrosive or chemically sensitive environments, wire diameter 2.5–5.0 mm depending on aperture size. Mesh is woven (crimped wire, plain square or rectangular aperture) for fine-to-medium screening or resistance-welded grid for heavy-duty coarse aggregate decks. Aperture tolerance ±5 % of nominal per ISO 4783. Panel edges are finished with PVC or rubber edge strips to protect the screen frame seal and prevent aggregate lodging at the panel perimeter. Panels are supplied to exact frame dimensions with pre-tensioned hooks or bolted tensioner bars as per the screen box design.

When to replace

  • Wire diameter reduced by more than 30 % of original gauge, measured by calibrated caliper — remaining section is structurally marginal.
  • Any broken or displaced wire creating an irregular aperture gap — a single break triggers full-deck replacement.
  • Gradation test results showing persistent cross-contamination between adjacent aggregate fractions in hot-storage bins.
  • Increased vibration or abnormal screen-box noise indicating partial mesh delamination from the frame seal.
  • Aggregate of the specified reject size found in the wrong hot-storage bin on sampling.

Compatibility & fitment

Screen decks are dimensioned to the screen box frame size and aperture schedule of the AVL-MAP screening unit; Avelta supplies decks in the correct frame dimensions and aperture combination for each plant capacity and mix-design specification.

Why buy from Avelta

Avelta screen decks are woven or welded to ISO 4783 aperture tolerance and supplied with individual aperture-certification documentation, giving the QC engineer a traceable record for mix design and regulatory compliance files.
