Overview
The mixer end plate dust seals are positioned at each shaft exit point on the fabricated end walls of the AVL-WMM mixing trough, forming the barrier between the abrasive interior environment and the bearing housings and couplings mounted on the outside. Each shaft passes through a machined bore in the end plate, and it is at this junction that fine aggregate dust, sub-millimetre stone particles, and moisture from the water addition system can migrate outward along the shaft surface into the bearing housing — the primary cause of premature bearing contamination in WMM plants.
The seal assembly typically comprises a primary lip-seal element retained in the end-plate bore and a secondary felt or foam wiper that traps any particles passing the first element. Avelta supplies the seals as an end-plate kit covering all shaft positions on one mixer, with a steel carrier ring for precision drop-in installation.
Function
By blocking the dust-migration path at the shaft exit, the end plate seals extend bearing service life from a contamination-limited 2,000–3,000 hours toward the bearing's full design L10 life of 8,000+ hours. They also prevent moisture tracking along the shaft, which causes fretting and corrosion beneath the paddle arm hub key. The seals must flex slightly with shaft runout (typically ±0.1 mm) without losing contact; incorrect seal sizing causes either inadequate sealing or excessive friction heating at the shaft surface.
Construction & quality
Primary seal element: moulded NBR multi-lip contact seal for standard duty or PTFE-lip seal for elevated shaft surface temperatures. Lips are coated with a low-friction PTFE dispersion to minimise running drag at the shaft surface. Secondary wiper: compressed wool-synthetic felt, 15 mm width, impregnated with a grease-repellent compound. Outer retaining ring: CNC-machined EN8 steel with a fine-turned bore to H7 tolerance for positive press-fit in the end-plate bore. The complete assembly is factory-aligned in the carrier ring and supplied ready for installation without measuring tools.

- Aggregate dust visible on the shaft surface outside the end plate
- Bearing housing grease showing grey or sandy contamination on inspection
- Circumferential wear groove on the shaft surface at the seal lip contact point
- Bearing outer race temperature rising without change in operating load or grease schedule
- Rust staining on the shaft surface outboard of the seal, indicating moisture tracking
