Overview
The elevator chain or belt is the tension member and bucket carrier of the hot aggregate elevator. Depending on the AVL-ABP plant model, this is either a heavy-duty steel roller chain — single or double strand — running on case-hardened sprockets, or a steel-rod or steel-cable rubber elevator belt running on lagged pulleys. The chain or belt operates continuously at elevated ambient temperature: the elevator casing interior reaches 60–100 °C from aggregate heat radiation during production, while cyclic loads from bucket loading at the boot and discharge momentum at the head generate high tensile fatigue stresses at every chain link or belt fastener zone.
Elevator chain or belt condition is a critical reliability item: an unplanned failure drops the full bucket string into the boot and instantly halts aggregate flow to the screen and hot bins, stopping the entire plant.
Function
The chain or belt transmits drive torque from the head shaft down through the loaded carry run to lift the full bucket train, and returns the empty buckets on the return run. Chain elongation from pin-and-bush wear, or belt elongation from splice and cord fatigue, determines the re-tensioning interval and the point of sprocket tooth-skipping risk. A stretched chain that skips sprocket teeth under load generates impact loads that rapidly fatigue chain plates and links; a failed connecting link or belt splice causes immediate elevator stoppage and potential ignition from hot aggregate contacting accumulated boot fines.
Construction & quality
Roller chain: pitch 100–200 mm (per elevator design), bearing-pin diameter 25–50 mm, through-hardened carbon or alloy steel to 40–50 HRC on pins and 35–45 HRC on inner side plates. Outer plates normalised for impact toughness. Assembly shot-peened for fatigue life improvement. Riveted or spring-clip connecting links supplied. Elevator belt (where specified): multi-ply EP carcass with transverse steel rods or longitudinal steel cables for positive bucket attachment, polyester-cotton or SBR cover, operating temperature rating to 100 °C ambient, joined with mechanical fasteners or vulcanised splice.
When to replace
- Chain pitch elongation exceeding 3% measured over a 30-link gauge length using a calibrated chain gauge
- Bearing pin or bush wear causing chain rattle and irregular seating in sprocket tooth roots
- Cracked or fractured chain side plates visible on inspection without full chain removal
- Belt cover cracking, ply delamination, or fastener-hole tear-out, particularly at bucket attachment zones
- Sprocket tooth hooking — chain rising onto sprocket tooth tips rather than dropping fully into the root during approach
Compatibility & fitment
Avelta supplies matched roller chain and elevator belt to AVL-ABP elevator specifications for 40 TPH to 320 TPH plant configurations; chain pitch, strand count, and connecting link type are confirmed against the customer's head shaft sprocket drawing before cutting and dispatch.
Why buy from Avelta
Avelta elevator chains are manufactured from through-hardened alloy steel with shot-peened link plates, supplied in pre-measured lengths with the correct number of connecting links and master links included, reducing site preparation time for a replacement shutdown.
