Overview

The aggregate bin floor wear plate is a replaceable hardened steel panel fitted to the base of each aggregate storage compartment in the AVL-CBP concrete batching plant. Aggregate bins hold coarse and fine aggregates — crushed stone, gravel, and sand — at charges ranging from 10 to 80 tonnes per compartment depending on plant capacity. The bin floor endures continuous compressive impact each time a compartment is loaded by wheel loader or conveyor, and sustained sliding abrasion as material discharges through the radial or sector gate onto the weigh belt or weigh hopper below.

The wear plate is interposed between the aggregate charge and the structural mild-steel floor fabrication, converting a costly structural repair into a low-cost consumable exchange. Panels are bolted or plug-welded in a segmented layout so individual sections can be swapped without lifting the bin or breaking load-cell connections, keeping plant downtime to a single shift.

Function

The plate absorbs the compressive impact of aggregate being dropped or conveyed into the bin and sustains the sliding friction of material discharging through the gate. Without an adequate wear plate the structural floor progressively thins, eventually allowing aggregate to breach the bin and damage underlying conveyors, load cells, or the weigh hopper frame. A failed floor also permits aggregate to pack under the gate seal, causing batching errors and gate jamming. Maintaining the wear plate in specification preserves bin geometry, protects load-cell accuracy by preventing frame distortion, and eliminates unplanned shutdowns for structural welding — directly protecting the plant's m³/h output rate.

Construction & quality

Manufactured from AR400 or Hardox 400 equivalent abrasion-resistant steel with a guaranteed minimum Brinell hardness of 360–420 HBW through the full plate thickness — not a surface treatment. Plate thickness ranges from 10 mm to 20 mm selected to match aggregate type, maximum lump size, and compartment discharge frequency. Panels are laser- or plasma-cut to customer-specific bin floor plan dimensions, then deburred and prime-coated for transit protection. Mounting holes are drilled and counter-bored to accept M16 or M20 flush-head fasteners, ensuring no proud bolt heads impede aggregate flow or snag the gate seal. For plants processing particularly hard quartzite, granite, or recycled concrete aggregate, an optional chromium-carbide overlay plate (55–60 HRC surface layer on mild-steel substrate) is available, extending service intervals by up to 2–3 times compared to plain AR plate under equivalent duty.

When to replace

  • Visible thinning or pitting on the plate surface, measurable with an ultrasonic thickness gauge at or below 4 mm residual thickness.
  • Cracks or fractures propagating inward from corner mounting holes, indicating fatigue from repeated impact loading.
  • Aggregate escaping around plate edges or through pin-hole perforations in the base floor.
  • Audible hollow ringing when striking the plate with a hammer, indicating local delamination or loss of contact with the substrate floor.
  • Load-cell drift or erratic batch weights, suggesting bin floor distortion caused by substrate exposure has altered weigh hopper frame geometry.
