Overview

The Collecting Conveyor Idler Roller is the cylindrical steel roller mounted on the carrying-side and return-side frames of the aggregate collecting belt conveyor on the AVL-CBP concrete batching plant. Carrying-side idlers are configured in three-roll troughing sets at 20° or 35° trough angle, forming the belt into a profile that contains the aggregate load. Return-side idlers are single flat rollers that support the empty belt underside between the tail and drive drums.

On a 25 m collecting conveyor with 1 000 mm carry idler spacing, over 70 individual rollers may be in service simultaneously. Because idler failure propagates rapidly from localised belt wear to belt edge damage or mistracking, high idler quality and regular inspection are among the most cost-effective reliability investments on the conveying system.

Function

Idler rollers support the belt and its aggregate load between frame cross-members, distributing the load into the frame structure and maintaining belt sag within the limits (typically 1–2% of idler spacing) needed for smooth, low-resistance belt travel. A seized idler creates a fixed friction point that burns a localised channel into the belt top cover. A flat-spotted or eccentric roller induces repetitive impact loading at belt speed, causing structural fatigue at the splice and accelerating cover wear across the full belt width at that station.

Construction & quality

Roller tubes are ERW steel, 89 mm or 108 mm OD, 3.5–5 mm wall, with pressed-in steel end caps housing sealed deep-groove ball bearings — 6205 or 6305 series — on solid mild steel shafts of 20 mm or 25 mm diameter with hex ends for drop-in mounting in standard bracket slots. A double-seal arrangement on each end face — outer labyrinth seal plus inner contact lip seal — excludes cement dust and surface water. Tubes are painted with one coat of alkyd or epoxy enamel. Rollers with tube diameters above 108 mm operating at belt speeds of 1.0 m/s or higher are dynamically balanced before dispatch.

When to replace

  • Audible rumbling, squealing, or rhythmic impact noise from a section of the conveyor run
  • Visible flat spot, dent, or shell corrosion on roller tube surface
  • Roller not rotating freely when belt is stopped — bearing seized on manual spin test
  • Localised belt top cover wear channel aligned with a fixed-position idler station
  • Belt mistracking deviation consistently originating at one idler set

Compatibility & fitment

Available in shell lengths and shaft diameters matched to 800 mm, 1 000 mm, and 1 200 mm belt-width conveyors on all AVL-CBP plant models; carrying and return idlers are supplied individually or as complete troughing sets with mounting brackets.

Why buy from Avelta

Avelta stocks idler rollers with double-sealed bearings and correctly dimensioned hex shafts, enabling drop-in replacement without modification or shimming — minimising conveyor downtime on a fast-cycle concrete batching operation.
