Overview

The belt weigher in the AVL-WMM collection conveyor sub-system provides the continuous gravimetric measurement of aggregate flow rate that the plant control system uses to regulate feeder belt speeds and verify the aggregate-to-water ratio in real time. At the heart of the weigher is one or more shear-beam load cells mounted beneath the weighing idler frame spanning a defined belt length. The load cell converts the vertical belt load at the weighing span into an analogue or digital signal proportional to the instantaneous material weight per metre of belt.

Avelta supplies replacement load cells individually or as matched pairs, with the strain-gauge bridge, an IP67-rated cable entry, and a factory calibration certificate. For plants equipped with a dual-idler weighing bridge, Avelta recommends replacing both cells simultaneously to maintain bridge symmetry and balance.

Function

The load cell signal, combined with the belt speed signal from the tachometer, allows the plant PLC to calculate instantaneous feed rate in TPH and totalized tonnage. An inaccurate or drifting load cell introduces systematic feed-rate error that corrupts the aggregate grading without triggering any obvious visual alarm — making it a hidden quality risk on live projects. Cell degradation caused by overload events, vibration fatigue, moisture ingress, or cable damage should be confirmed by annual verification against a calibrated standard, with replacement at any drift greater than 0.3% full scale.

Construction & quality

Shear-beam stainless steel body (17-4PH or equivalent), fully welded and hermetically sealed. Strain gauge: precision foil gauge, 350 Ω, full Wheatstone bridge, temperature-compensated from −20 °C to +70 °C with thermal drift less than 0.02% FS/°C. Output sensitivity: 2 mV/V ±0.1%. Cable: 4-core shielded, PUR outer jacket rated for outdoor UV exposure, 5 m standard (extended lengths available). Connector: stainless Amphenol or terminal-strip flying leads. Mating surface: ground to flatness ±0.01 mm on mounting faces.

When to replace

  • Totalized tonnage reading drifting versus truck ticket weights by more than 0.5%
  • Zero-return drift greater than 0.2% FS after load removal in ambient conditions
  • Calibration verification check failing at any standard test point
  • Cable jacket cracking, abrasion damage, or moisture at the connector
  • Load cell body visibly deformed or showing evidence of impact damage or overload
