Overview

The water pump in the AVL-WMM plant is a close-coupled or end-suction centrifugal pump delivering water to the spray nozzle header at 2–6 bar working pressure and flow rates of 5–80 m³/h depending on plant capacity and mix moisture target. The two highest-wearing internal components — the impeller and the mechanical shaft seal — are subject to continuous hydraulic and abrasive loading from suspended fines in site water and require periodic planned replacement.

Avelta supplies the impeller and seal as a matched kit, ensuring that the replacement seal is dimensionally compatible with the new impeller and the original pump casing bore in one service operation. This approach avoids the common situation where a retained old seal fails shortly after an impeller replacement, requiring a second pump strip-down within the same maintenance window.

Function

The impeller generates the pressure and flow rate required to deliver water to the spray manifold at design conditions. A worn or eroded impeller reduces pump head, lowering nozzle operating pressure and degrading the spray pattern, which reduces water distribution quality in the mixer and causes systematic under-moisturing of the WMM charge. The mechanical seal prevents water from migrating along the pump shaft to the motor bearing; seal failure causes shaft corrosion and motor winding moisture ingress — a high-cost consequence of a low-cost consumable reaching end of life without intervention.

Construction & quality

Impeller: cast from grey iron GG20 or bronze CuSn5Zn5Pb5 depending on site water chemistry, semi-open or closed radial-flow design to ISO 9906, vane profiles matched to the original pump casing to maintain the design head-flow curve. Each impeller is statically balanced before despatch. Mechanical seal: single-acting balanced mechanical seal, silicon carbide (SiC) rotating face, carbon stationary seat, FKM (Viton) secondary elastomers, 316 stainless spring. Seal face lapped to 0.0006 mm flatness. Kit contents: 1 impeller (machined and balanced), 1 mechanical seal assembly, 1 shaft O-ring, 1 casing gasket, installation instruction sheet.

When to replace

  • Pump delivery pressure reduced more than 10% from commissioning baseline at the same motor speed
  • Motor current increasing without a corresponding flow rate increase, indicating cavitation or vane erosion
  • Water leakage appearing at the pump gland or shaft area
  • Pump vibration or noise increase consistent with impeller imbalance from asymmetric erosion
  • Seal face visibly wet or dripping during operation — an immediate replacement indicator

Compatibility & fitment

Impellers and seals matched to the centrifugal pump model fitted on the specific AVL-WMM plant; Avelta identifies the pump model from the plant's serial-number record and confirms impeller OD, seal cartridge dimensions, and elastomer specification before despatch.

Why buy from Avelta

Avelta impeller and seal kits are machined and balanced to the original pump design data, ensuring the replacement achieves the rated head-flow curve without field trimming or casing modification.
